BY KRISSI HUMBARD — Candidate registration for the upcoming city election opened today.

Candidates have until 5 p.m. on March 31st to submit their registration. The candidate packet is available on the third floor of the city building Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Candidates can also find it online. The city’s election is May 2.

To run for council, candidates must be registered to vote in Prince George’s County, Maryland, or in the city only voter registry; must reside in the ward for which they are running; and must be at least of 18 years old on the day of election. Valid identification is required.

The Hyattsville City Council is composed of 10 members and the mayor. All are elected to a four-year term. One seat from each ward will be up for election in May.

Interested in running? The city is hosting two candidate information sessions on either March 6 from 6-7 p.m., or March 25 from 10-11 a.m. Both sessions will be held on the second floor of the municipal building.

Councilmember Shani Warner (Ward 2) called being on council “a terrific experience.”

“This is a small enough community where a single person can make a big difference,” she said. “The council is making decisions right now which will shape our community for a generation.”
