Maria D. James
Maria D. James joined the Hyattsville Life & Times as the new managing editor in December 2015. A native of Virginia Beach, VA., James received her bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications from Virginia Union University and a master’s degree in Strategic Public Relations from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Maria begin her journalism career as a editorial administrative assistant for The Daily Advance in Elizabeth City, NC. In 2009, she relocated to the Washington, DC area and transitioned her career into working in public relations and marketing.
Her writing has been published in local and national publications such as Black Enterprise Magazine, Hampton Roads Magazine, Hope for Women Magazine, and The Virginian Pilot.
Maria is active in her community as well. She is a member of Washington Women in PR and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and volunteers in the kitchen for Thrive DC. Maria was recently appointed as secretary for the Maryland chapter of the Virginia Union University National Alumni Association. In 2007, she was honored as Young Alumni of the Year for her distinguished service to Virginia Union University (VUU) and the VUU National Alumni Association.
