Tax credit presentation for homes in the historic district

Steve Spencer touches up his house number before the 2012 HPA home tour.BY GRETCHEN BRODTMAN — Homeowners located in any Maryland historic district, including Hyattsville and other parts of Maryland may be eligible for a tax credit worth 20% of qualified rehabilitation expenditures, according to the Maryland Historic Trust’s website.  Residents who live within the Hyattsville historic district  may be eligible for this program, even if they do not live in historic homes.

The Hyattsville Preservation Association invited the Trust’s preservation officer Melissa Archer to explain the Historic Home Tax Credit application process on Thursday, September 25 from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

HPA President Gloria Felix-Thompson says she is “always surprised that people did not know about this program” and hopes there will be a substantial turnout from the community.

The program was designed to give homeowners an “incentive to do true restoration and rehabilitation work” and ” alleviate the burden of owning a historic property”  according to Archer. She believes that there is a “public benefit to maintaining a home in (our) historic communities.”

Examples of eligible repairs include repairs to the roof, chimney, masonry and plumbing, electrical or mechanical systems as well as floor refinishing and structural repairs.  Homeowners may participate without attending this information session.  There is also a small fee during the review process and a rolling deadline for applications.
