Alert Update: PGPD investigating fatal shooting in the City of Hyattsville

By MARIA D. JAMES — Around midnight on August 14, the City of Hyattsville Police Department issued an advisory regarding the report of a shooting in the 4200 block of Oglethorpe Street. The following update was issued at 12:20 p.m.:

Prince George’s County Police Homicide Unit detectives are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred in the City of Hyattsville on Tuesday night. The victim is 26-year-old Yuri Echavarria Jr., of Hyattsville. Preliminarily, detectives do not believe this was a random crime.

On August 13th at approximately 9:50 pm, officers with the City of Hyattsville Police Department responded to the 4200 block of Oglethorpe Street for the report of a shooting. When they arrived, the officers discovered Echavarria inside the stairwell of an apartment building suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Detectives are working to establish a motive and identify suspect(s).

The Prince George’s County Police Department investigates all homicides in the City of Hyattsville.
