BY REBECCA BENNETT —On Nov. 14, the annual Hyattsville Hereos Bowl between the Hyattsville City Police Department (HCPD) and the Hyattsville Volunteer Fire Department (HVFD) to benefit the Sonny Frazier Toy Drive took place in Magruder Park. HCPD won the game 38 to 13 and a total of $1,042.61 was raised for the Sonny Frazier Toy Drive.
According to its website, the event began more than two decades ago when Councilmember Ruth Ann Frazier’s (Ward 5) family would hold a holiday party and invite local disadvantaged kids:
What started as a Mom and Pop party in my home is now held in the Hyattsville City Building on Gallatin Street. One of the elves is now Santa and the other is the DJ/MC. We serve lunch and give 5 presents to every child; we receive the names of deserving children from the police, fire department, City schools, and other City departments. We have games, songs, pictures with Santa, dancing, face painting, crafts, and whatever else we can think of to put a smile on the face of a child.
According to toy drive organizers, residents may donate new, unwrapped toys by placing them in boxes at the following locations until Wednesday, Dec. 9:
- Hyattsville Elementary School, 5311 43rd Avenue
- Hyattsville Municipal Building, 4310 Gallatin Street
- Lawson’s Pharmacy, 3415 Hamilton Street
- College Park Academy – 7501 Adelphi Road
Monetary contributions may be sent to Mrs. Ruth Ann Frazier at 5013 37th Avenue, Hyattsville, Md. 20782 with checks payable to The Sonny Frazier Toy Drive.
